Having A Lot Of Fun With These Soccer Finishing Drills!

Here is a quick finishing exercise which is much more dynamic than the typical (and boring) stand in a line and wait for a shot drill which you see most coaches using to teach finishing.

Initial Set-Up

Set-up a goal – goalposts are preferable but you could use poles or tall cones – on one endline of an approximately 20m x 20m area.

Ideally you’ll set-up one area for every 3-4 players in your group, however the practice will work with anything up to 6 players per area.

Place poles 1m inside each post to create two narrow target zones for your players to aim at.

Inside your areas, mark out three small zones (the white markers in the diagram below). Place one facing the goal and put one either side of the goal close to the endline. Place a couple of balls in these two.

The Importance of Soccer First Touch to Improve Dribbling Skills

Once players have a feel for running with the ball, keeping it close and changing speed and direction quickly, it’s time to put these skills to use in a 1v1 situation.

I like this game because it emphasises the importance of a positive first touch, it has a very comfortable work-rest ratio and kids will love it because it involves scoring lots of goals!

Initial Set-Up

Set-up a couple of approximately 20m x 30m pitches. Place a goal at either end and mark a line 10m from each. This will be indicate the goalkeeper’s area and also be used in the 1v1 contest.

Put a couple of gates on each sideline

For simplicity the diagrams only show one pitch – you’ll have to set-up the same game for every set of 6 players you have.
